The Aomori Nebuta matsuri draws up to 4 million visitors each year to the northern part of Japan. It is one of the most famous matsuris in all of Japan. Unfortunately we only got to see the last day of the festival (held each year from 1st of august till 7th) and didn’t see any of the floats parading in the street.
The festival ends with parade of the floats during the day which i assume isn’t too spectacular (you are supposed to watch them light up during night and not during the day!) so we decided to go see the firework marking the end of the matsuri instead.
We left the firework a bit early to beat the traffic jam. It still took us nearly 2 hours to go to our next hotel near lake Towada and we were both very exhausted – me from driving, and Itsuki from car sickness due to the many curves driving up into the mountains.
Transport: Most of the city is closed down during the festival. There are however parking spots with shuttle services all over the place. The festival is hugely popular and booking for hotels should be made almost a year in advance.
Website: The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri website is available in English as well as Japanese.
I really wanted to visit Aomori Nebuta maturi!! My aunt went to there in this year but it was rained… You were lucky!!!
There is always a next year
! I am planing to go again, there are at least 5 very nice looking matsuris in that region in early August (Nebuta Aomori, Tachi Neputa Goshogawara, Neputa Hirosaki, Akita Kanto Matsuri, Hanawa Bayashi in Kazuno) and i am planning to go see them all
!
you did’nt check the schedule previously?
and there is not always next year, if we are lucky, we will have it…mmm…let’s thank for today
I believe Nebuta is one of the most exciting matsuri in Japan. Aomori was the North’s end long ago, so the place still has a special atmosphere…http://www.lantecweb.net/shikokan/ …when you come back to Aomori, I reccomend you to visit here too. Shiko is my favorite engraver.
I knew about the schedule .. but as you know it’s a very popular festival and flight/hotels were difficult to find so we only got to see the last day of the festival with the firework. I probably should already book the hotels now for next year
